We are always keen to hear from people that would be interested in becoming a volunteer mediator or coach. You do not need any specialist skills, but we look for volunteers with good communication skills, impartiality, a willingness to understand all viewpoints and a commitment to supporting people.

You will normally live or work in Surrey and are willing to volunteer your time to help people resolve their disputes. You will be at the heart of our charity, and we work hard to ensure you are supported to provide high-quality mediation and coaching so that everyone enjoys their experience of volunteering with us.

All our volunteers complete our approved training courses before they start their volunteer journey.

Questions you may have

  • What does a volunteer mediator do?

As a volunteer mediator, you will help facilitate conversations between disputing parties, guiding them towards understanding and resolution. This involves active listening, asking open-ended questions, and helping participants explore potential solutions. You’ll remain neutral throughout the process, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected.

  • What does a volunteer coach do?

Volunteer coaches provide one-to-one support to people who are unable to solve their situation through mediation.  We offer three separate coaching sessions to help people have the confidence and skills to manage challenging situations more effectively.

  • Do I need prior experience to be a volunteer?

No prior experience is necessary to volunteer as a mediator or as a coach.  We provide comprehensive training that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to carry out either role.  The initial training course must be completed before you start to volunteer.

  • How much time do I need to commit?

It depends upon how many cases are referred to us but, as a guide, we would expect our volunteer mediators to be involved in 5 cases per year.

  • Is there ongoing support for volunteers?

Yes, we offer ongoing support, supervision, and opportunities for professional development. You will have access to a dedicated volunteer coordinator, regular check-ins with experienced mediators, peer support groups, and additional training sessions to enhance your skills and confidence.

  • How do I apply to be a volunteer?

To volunteer, please fill out our application form. After submitting your application, you will be invited for an interview to discuss your interest, background, and suitability for the role.
