Resolving Conflict, Rebuilding Teams

Workplace Mediation

Conflict in the workplace rarely resolves itself. What starts as a small misunderstanding between colleagues can quickly affect morale, productivity, staff wellbeing, and the wider culture of an organisation.

Whether tensions exist between team members, managers and employees, or across departments, unresolved workplace conflict can lead to increased absence, formal grievances, resignations, and even costly tribunal proceedings.

Our workplace mediation service helps organisations address issues early, professionally, and confidentially — before they escalate.

At Mediation Surrey, we provide experienced, accredited workplace mediators who create a safe and structured environment where people can speak openly, rebuild trust, and find practical solutions together.

Rather than relying on formal disciplinary or grievance procedures, mediation focuses on restoring working relationships, improving communication, and helping teams move forward positively.

Why Organisations Choose Workplace Mediation

Workplace mediation is increasingly recognised as one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to resolve conflict at work. Early intervention can help organisations to:

  • Resolve disputes quickly and professionally
  • Reduce grievances, disciplinary action, and tribunal risk
  • Minimise disruption to teams and productivity
  • Improve communication and working relationships
  • Support employee wellbeing and retention
  • Protect organisational culture and reputation
  • Save management time and associated HR costs

A Simple, Effective Mediation Process:

Our one-day workplace mediation process is designed to be straightforward, supportive, and highly effective.

  • Our mediators work in pairs, providing a balanced and supportive approach throughout
  • Participation is entirely voluntary and confidential
  • Each participant has a private meeting with the mediators to discuss the situation openly
  • We then facilitate a structured joint meeting where everyone has the opportunity to explain their perspective and desired outcomes
  • With facilitation from the mediators, participants work together to agree practical solutions and next steps

Throughout the process, our professionally trained and accredited mediators ensure conversations remain constructive, impartial, and focused on resolution.

Questions you may have

  • When should mediation be used?

Mediation can be useful at any time but is most effective in the early stages of conflict. The aim is to jointly develop an agreement about how to go forward.

Some situations that may be suitable for mediation include:

    • Perceived bullying, harassment or discrimination in the workplace
    • Formal action interruption – to attempt to resolve the issues informally first, rather than pursuing formal methods
    • Apparently irresolvable disputes between colleagues which is affecting how they work together
    • Where a relationship has completely broken down
  • Who should suggest mediation?

Anyone can suggest mediation as a good way forward for resolving a workplace issue. An employee may express interest in mediation or it may be suggested by a manager.

  • How long does it take to carry out mediation?

Most mediations are completed within one day.

  • Who are the mediators?

Mediators are independent, impartial and professionally trained. They are genuinely interested in helping resolve the situation, they won’t take sides or judge who is right or wrong.

  • Will the employees have to take time off work?

People in the mediation will be required to take time away from their ordinary day-to-day work. The organisation would need to consult with them to ensure that the sessions are arranged for a suitable day.

  • Can someone accompany the parties for moral support?

People are allowed to bring someone for moral support. This would need to be a work colleague. However, they won’t be allowed in the private meeting with the mediators, or in the joint meeting itself. This is to encourage participants to discuss and resolve their issues between themselves.

  • Will pursuing mediation affect the status of any formal procedure?

Trying mediation does not prevent parties from pursuing formal procedures at a later date should they feel that the situation has not been satisfactorily addressed. However, any information discussed during mediation cannot be submitted as evidence in a formal procedure, as it is confidential.

If either party has already lodged a formal complaint, they can still pursue mediation. The formal procedure should be put on hold whilst the mediation is pursued, and can be resumed if the mediation is deemed unsuccessful.

  • What is the cost and what does it include?

Our one-day mediation is £995 (no VAT charged). This includes the services of two mediators, arrangement of all meetings in conjunction with the employer and writing up of outcomes.  The employer would normally cover this cost.
